  • Capital Punishment will be awarded to the rapists of girls aged 12 or younger in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The MP assembly has passed the Bill unanimously on Monday which set Death Sentence for those who found guilty of raping girls 12 or less.
  • The Bill was passed unanimously by all the parties including Ruling Party and the opposition Congress.
  • This historic bill passes after the approval of Bill titled as Dand Vidhi (Madhya Pradesh Sanshodhan Vidheyak, 2017 comes from the Cabinet, now the bill will be sent to the President for his assent.
  • As per the report of National Crime Reports Bureau, largest number of rape cases have been recorded in the Madhya Pradesh.
  • Therefore, passage of this bill must deter rape offenders and security of girl child will be ensured in the State.
  • The Bill proposes to amend two clauses 376-A and 376-D of the Indian Penal Code.
  • The new legislation provides for awarding death penalty or a minimum term of 14 years rigorous imprisonment or life imprisonment for raping girls aged 12 or below.
  • The bill proposes three to seven years imprisonment for first commission of sexual harassment and which will increase up-to 7 to 10 years upon subsequent commission of the offence and a fine of 1 lacs will also be imposed upon the convicts.
  • The unanimous passage of this bill is really appreciable effort of MP Government since this is a significant step towards prevention of crimes against Children specially girls.
