DHANTERAS, the festival known as (Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi), Dhana indicates wealth & Trayodashi indicates to 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika.
On Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped on the auspicious day to provide prosperity and well being. Dhanteras holds special significance for the business community due to the customary purchases of precious metals on this day. Lord Kubera, the God of assets and wealth is worshipped on this day. The day of Dhanteras is also known for Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti, the Birth Anniversary of the God of Ayurveda, all the new innovations related to medical science were invented at this particular day.
One more reason for celebrating Dhanteras is the story of King Hima’s 16 years old son. His son’s death was predicted on the 4th day of his marriage by a snake bite. But King Hima’s daughter-in-law played a crucial role in saving prince’s life. She planned to save the life of her husband. She decided not to allow her husband to sleep on that particular night and keep her husband awake. She collected her all ornaments, gold and silver coins & made a heap at the entrance of the bed room and lightened the entire room to keep her husband awake.
Yamaraj, the God of Death entered the bed room in the form of a snake. He felt blind-folded by the sharply lit lamps and glittering shine of jewellery. Still he tried to enter the room by climbing the heap of all the shining articles. But as the snake entered, she started singing in her melodious voice. While listening to the song of prince’s wife, he remained in the room for the whole night, unaware of the fact and as the night turned to morning, he had to leave without taking the Prince. In this way King Hima’s daughter-in-law saved the life of her husband. From that day onwards Dhanteras is being celebrated.
