Distant Learning Engineering Degrees Stand Cancelled by Supreme Court

  • It seems to be a big blow to the future of thousands of holders of engineering degree through distant learning provided by hundreds of deemed universities and institutions since 2001.
  • Loss of jobs is also feared for such engineering graduates who secured degrees through distant learning.
  • It has been on record that University Grant Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) did not recognize these degrees which had the approval of Distance Education Council (DEC).
  • Supreme Court has observed that without scrutinizing the course study, the courses were started by the deemed universities and institutions, just on the instance of DEC without consulting UGC & AICTE.
  • Supreme Court has also given directions to the HRD Ministry, Union Government for meticulously adhering to the regulations of UGC and AICTE and impose stringent penalties for commercial misuse of education.
  • The Apex Court has given restraint order to the deemed universities for offering such correspondence courses in engineering stream.
  • However, the students of batches of 2001 to 2005 were given opportunity to clear in two more chances.
  • But thereafter, no mercy has been shown for such engineering degree holders.
  • All degrees awarded to students who completed the courses through distant learning stand cancelled.
  • All benefits arrived as a result of such degrees also stand cancelled such as promotions or higher studies.
  • But any monetary benefit derived by securing such degrees are not to be recovered.
  • Any expenses incurred by the students on securing admission and study material will have to be refunded by such deemed universities and institutions, as directed by SC.
