Most of the taxpayers are unaware of the fact that process of filing of income tax returns get complete only when it gets e-verified. Till last year i.e. F.Y. 2013-14 , after uploading of income tax return (without DSC), a copy of acknowledgement called ITR-V was needed to be sent to income tax department, Bangalore through speed post/ordinary post.
Now to reduce this paperwork, CBDT has introduced a new mode of filing of return through E-verification under which there is no need to send e-verified ITR-V copy to income tax department.
Following are the three options to e-verify the Income Tax Return:-
Option-1: Verification through Electronic Verification Code (EVC)
If a taxpayer has income of less than 5 lakhs and having no refund then income tax return can be verified using EVC.
EVC is a 10 digit alphanumeric code and is valid for 72 hours only. It is generated at the time of filing of return and is sent to registered mobile number and email address with income tax department. If return cannot be e-verified within 72 hours then it should be generated again to e-verify the return. EVC is unique for one PAN and validate only one return for one assessment year.
Option-2: Verification through Aadhaar OTP
Second option available is Aadhaar based OTP (one time password). First of all, aadhaar number should be linked with income tax PAN to generate aadhaar OTP. If there is mismatch in records registered with income Tax PAN and aadhaar database then aadhaar no. could not be linked to PAN and aadhaar OTP cannot be generated. It is 6 digit number and is valid for only half an hour only. Aadhaar OTP is sent to mobile number registered with Aadhaar database.
Option-3: Verification through Net Banking
If taxpayer has income of more than 5 lakhs or have refund due or aadhaar no. cannot be linked with PAN then he is provided with only one option i.e. e-verification through Net Banking. Specified banks have been registered with IT department and provide direct access through income tax website to e-verify the return. Taxpayer can use this facility by using his internet banking ID and password. Banks provide this facility to those accountholders who have registered their PAN with the bank.
Last but not the least, in case if any taxpayer is not able to e-verify his income tax return by any of the above methods then option to send copy of acknowledgement i.e. ITR-V is still available to him. He can send signed copy of ITR-V to income tax department and get the process of filing of return complete.
