Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union Speech and touched the subject on the Green card. President Trump said that his country should move towards merit based immigration system while approving green cards because this was the only way to push his ‘America First’ policy. President Trump has also asked the US Congress to pass a legislation to promote merit based immigration.

“It is time to move towards a merit-based immigration system — one that admits people who are skilled, who want to work, who will contribute to our society, and who will love and respect our country,” President Trump said in his first State of the Union address.

This move of President Trump to adopt only merit based immigration system would benefit highly skilled Indian professionals & workers. However, the families of these highly skilled workers could no longer be sponsored by these workers under this merit based system.

President Trump declared four pillars of his immigration reforms in his first speech which included pathways to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal immigrants who were brought in the US by their parents at a young age, second pillar contains a great wall on the southern side of the country under a plan to secure the country’s borders and thirdly the trump asked to end of visa lottery system. The last and fourth pillar is to protect nuclear family by ending chain migration.

President Trump said that this immigration reform was necessary both for economy and security of US.

The declaration of President Trump is a combination of both good as well as bad news for the Indian workers. The merit based immigration would give chances to highly skilled workers to get work in US on merits while end of chain migration and visa lottery system would prevent these workers to sponsor their families.
