Yoga: The Need of the Hour

Tapasvibhyo ‘dhiko yogi gyanibhyo ‘pi mato ‘dhikah Karmibhyashchadhiko yogi tasmadhyogi bhavarjuna

Which Means:
“A yogi is greater than the ascetic, greater than the empiricist and greater than the fruitive worker. Therefore, O Arjuna, in all circumstances, be a yogi.”
This shows that yoga and yogis have been having a vital importance since our historic times.
Good health is the secret of happiness and good interpersonal relations. But it is very difficult to keep oneself physically as well as mentally fit in today’s life full of hustle-bustle. It is the yoga which can help you to lead a happy and prosperous life. Sickness is worse than rigorous imprisonment. A sick person not only suffers physically but also gets affected mentally, professionally and economically also. Health and happiness are not goods or services which one can buy from market or borrow it from someone. As we are in 21st century where modern science has succeeded in finding cure of all the big ailments. However,various vaccinations, surgical techniques can only curedisease, but cannot make a person healthy as they don’t prevent disease.
A good physical as well as mental health canbe obtained only through proper diet, regular exercise and meditation. Yes, it is only possible through regular practice of yoga and meditation to get rid of chronic diseases, tensions and pain. There are not only physical unhealthiness but also the mental tensions that disturb a man’s life. As mental tensions are more dangerous than nuclear bomb. Many big diseases like heart attack, depression, hypertensions and digestive system related problems are generally the outcome of tensions and mental stress. Apart from tensions, un healthy lifestyle like having junk foods, alcohol, and smoking, increasing level of air pollution, water pollution, use of pesticides in eatables &vegetables, and more intake of dairy products may result into various health-related issues. Sometimes vaccination cannot cure these diseases but the same may be cured via taking proper and healthy nutritious diets, regular exercise, yoga and practicing stress relieving Pranayamas.
World Health Organization have already warned all the developing nations and Asian countries including India that these countries would be affected by chronic diseases like Heart, Diabetic, Cancer etc. by 2040 and these diseases would spread like epidemic. Thus, to avoid these dangerous diseases, one has to start yoga practice from now onwards as prediction of WHO show those children who are 10-15 years of age would be in control of these chronic diseases. Although, yoga may not replace the conventional medicines or relieve the diseases completely, yet it work as an alternative method of healing which would work slowly if practiced regularly and that too with right technics. Continued and proper practice of yoga would reduce the use of medicines by 20% to 100% within 6 months or 1 year.
“Yoga is an ancient practice which was initiated around 6000 years ago. Earlier, yoga was a part of people’s daily life and they used to practice yoga every day.” But with the passage of time, people became lazy and stuck to their routines so badly that they could not get time to practice yoga or rather they became least interested to practice yoga.
Yoga not only helps to keep healthy but it also establishes a balance of body, mind and soul. The word ‘Yoga’ has been derived from Sanskrit term ‘YUJ’ which means ‘to join together’ or ‘to unite’. Yoga is a union of the body and the mind. Earlier, Yoga was practiced by the Sanyasis to meditate themselves. There is no minimum or maximum age to perform yoga, any child, adult or aged person can perform yoga. But there are some special “Yogaasans” (Postures) for persons of different age groups. One should also practice yoga carefully if suffering from any ailment because some of the asanas should not be practiced in ailment. For e.g. “Sheersh- asana” should not be practiced if one is suffering from heart disease.
It has been proved that continuous practices of “Yogaasans” touch life at various levels like physical, psychological and spiritual. There are more fruitful benefits of Yoga which are discussed below in detail:
The regular practice of yoga improves blood circulation in whole body.
It increase the resistance power of body, make muscles strong or powerful.
It keeps away the joints pain in old age.
Continued practice of Pranayama is to improve the breathing capacity, control over mind and strengthen nervous system of body.
Meditation will help to reduce anxiety and mental stress and stop the production of stress to a great extent.
One has to practice “Yogaasans” and “Pranayama” properly and carefully to get rid of diseases but if one does not practice it property or on proper time it may give rise o various diseases. One can hire a yoga teacher to learn yoga. Yoga is not only related to physical exercise but include living a balanced life which follows ethical standards and sense of integrity. There areeight branches of Yoga: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratayahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi.
Due to the innumerous benefits of Yoga, our Prime Minister Narender Modi is also supporting and promoting yoga globally. While delivering his speech in UN Assembly, Narender Modi had spoken on the need of yoga. He said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient traditions. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature………….” It is after Mr. Narendra Modi’s proposal in his speech in UN Assembly that “21st June is officially declared as International Yoga Day by the United Nations General Assembly.”
The first Yoga day was celebrated on 21st June 2015 while fourth celebration of Yoga Day was held on 21st June this year in the whole world along with India. This year, theme of International Yoga Day was ‘Yoga for Peace’. Yoga sessions were organized at various places in India. The big one was held in Kota where 2 lacs people along with Baba Ramdev performed yoga exercises. Prime Minister Narender Modi has requested people of India to embrace yoga while delivering speech on 4th International Yoga Day. Now the whole world accepted the power of yoga and started practicing yoga.
